    I would be afraid to use any method that releases the toxins, waste, and hard metals currently stored in your sandbed into the water column. This can easily kill off a tank.

    I would drain the tank into a holding tub and put all the fish and non attached corals into the tub. Use either a cup or wet vac to suck the crushed coral out of the tank. Then pour in your new sand.

    Risking loosing a few snails and some pods is a lot better than risking your entire tank.

    Not real concerned about that, I syphon my substrate every water change, well half each water change, shouldn't be too bad exempt under the rock work.

    That is a good point, but I have used the SOLO cup method many times with no issues. I'm not saying you are wrong by any means though.

    +1 from people who have done this. you dont need to worry about most your corals, 20-30 minutes should be fine. In the natural reef alot of coral is exposed turning tides. When you drain a tank to low water, make sure you have a low point in you substrate and fish will gravitate for easy netting.
