I have an opportunity to get Elos tank for my office.

    http://www.elosusa.com/store/product/135/system-70-w-ps-100

The caveat, I have to pay for any additional equipment and maintain the tank.

I can't decide if this is good or bad idea :) Part of me wants to say heck yeah, but I am also a little worried.

    Questions:

    - The looks are important to the person in charge, so that tank model has to be it. Anyone has experience with this system? Or am I better of buying Elos tank/sump/stand only and doing my own skimmer, etc.

    - Anyone else maintaining an office tank? What are your thoughts on the whole experience?

    Thanks.

Looks like a great tank. Personally, if it was me, I would stray away from being the person in charge of any office tank. If something goes wrong, stuff dies, looks bad etc, it just comes back on you.

Then when you take leave etc who is knowledgable to take care of the tank?

If the office manager, boss, whatever, wants a tank for the office, then she/he should employ people from an aquarium servicing business to come and look after the tank for them, so you know that the tank is taken care of regardless of what happens to your individual circumstances.

    Keep hobbies for home.

I knew all of this in the back of my mind. Guess I just needed to hear someone else say this. Thanks :)

I'd have to agree to this, if I did something similar I'd probably at the very least have a serious conversation regarding what it will take short/long term and set his expectations for the fact that it will be costly and there will inherently be losses. Taking it to the next level of signing a contract and waiver of responsibility in the event something happens. Long term realities though would have to include either a maintenance contact with a local company or yourself. Also make sure he's not thinking he can put a shark or tang in there!

Don't. Don't take your work home with you. And you're also stuck with no vacations unless you spend tons more on automation or a caretaker.
Not to be a downer, but I've tried doing this and the sheer number of things that can go wrong just ruined it for me.

If you do go with the tank, look in to cadlights. Its an elos look alike on a budget and will probably allow you to get some money for equipment.

No way would I do it. Just my .02. Especially if you're expected to maintain it and buy equipment and such......your boss would get the way sweet end of that deal :) Take the enthusiasm and start another tank in your house!
