That T on the pump is pretty common.

With regards to the eggcrate, most use the uncoated white kind, not the silver.

The problem I have is I don't understand how I will keep a certain flow to the tank if I put a T in and return it to the sump. Ohms law tells me that it will take the path of least resistance like electricity, am I correct in thinking this way? Just having a hard time visualizing the connection for the lines. My thought is outlet of pump to inlet of T-valve and outlet of T-valve to display tank. If I put a line back to the tank right before the T-valve wont the water just run in a circle??:-/

I've read about the T back to the sump somewhere on 3reef. I'll probably do the same w/ my Mag7. Would a ball valve between the T and the sump help you control the flow so a majority of the water goes back to the tank (ie create a path of greater resistance to the sump)?

I am putting a flow meter in the return like so I can see how much I am moving. But something just seems like it will just return to the sump if I use the same size line as my return before the T-valve.

Yes a ball valve will do the trick.
There are also expensive valves built into the T that you can get at high end plumbing stores for like $35. I would just get the T and then put a Ball Valve on each side of the T. Although you really only need one on the side that goes straight to your sump bc. that is the side you will want to limit the flow to the most. That should only cost about $10. Also it is worth getting a check valve as well before the T in case the power goes back to but down on a reverse siphon.
