My friend bought that same skimmer on ebay for his 55 gallon, never did a very good job.... ended up throwing it away and buying a aqua c remora.

I saw those and steered clear. I actually bought a repaired factory 2nd bak-pak on ebay for about $100 shipped to the house. It seems to work well on my 46 bowfront. I had a berlin x2 turbo skimmer and could never get it set correctly. I resold that on ebay (actually for a profit) and bought the CPR.

i bought a reef starter kit when i was a super-noob before reading hours and hours worth of posts here :) anyways, it came with one of those, and i havent even finished the setup of my tank yet, and can tell its a P.O.S. i did hook it up and let it run for a bit, and it was leaking between the chambers inside and hardly produces bubbles its also got limited ability to control the output because the top leaks too. to make it even remotely useable id have to silicone the crap out of it. if anything ill use it as a backup in the event my vertex dies.

luckily, i knew before i even got it that it wasnt gonna be my end solution. i bought the kit for the tank cuz it was cheap.

In the pic the skimmer is running on a FW tank I think, and the bubbles will be low anyway as its not saltwater. Don't be so fast to chuck cheap stuff away, I have alot of cheap bits that I use on QT and baby tanks and they all work just fine. Just because It doesnt have a well known name brand stamp on it, doesn't mean its junk.

Hahaa ebay things arent always bad its just the stores are over priced. i got stuff off ebay and they are fine and not to mention cheap. so i wouldnt call it a waste. but if buying a 400 dollar skimmer makes u feel safe then so be it. but a 150 dollar one works just as good for me.

There's plenty of good affordable skimmers: Bubble Magus, Precision Marine Red Line, Eshopps, ASM, etc....no need to go for ones that don't work...
