Just like phoenixhieghts said do it in stages a little at a time and you should be ok. Dumdum I'm not so sure about that, this is just how we learn the hobby. Happy reefing

First of all, you are going on a false assertion. BIO BALLS ARE NOT BAD!! Really, I am tired of all the false notions allowed to perpetrate forums. Rock rubble allowed to collect detritus can actually be worse than bio balls. Here is a good read to help you understand things; Bio-Balls Don't Go Bad, They Just Get Dirty

I have been using bioballs for double digit years here - they do me well. In all the reading I have done over the years my definitive take-away is “what works for one, may or may not work for another”.

If you are up and running, stick with the bioballs and give them a chance to work for you. chances are that you are going to have other (real) challenges come your way in time. Stick on this forum and you will do just fine.

Bio balls only go bad because people use them incorrectly. Used correctly they are low maintenance and beneficial. Their correct use is to have water trickle through them, and not be fully submerged.
As for your question about switching to rocks, I am not sure I understand it. Otters fully cured your rocks for you? Or you need to know how many pounds to put in an otter? I would not get involved with otters at all personally. They are tricky, clever animals that look cute enough but would probably bite the heck out of you given the chance. Backstabbing giant aquatic ferrets they are!

just to back up packleader on his assertions. lol

A 49-year-old triathlete in this mountain town about 275 km west of Calgary was training in an area lake for an upcoming Ironman competition when he had the surprise of his life — an angry otter viciously attacking his leg about a dozen times

In the very least they will take your treasure. And by treasure I mean anything that is shiny or noisy. Or anything else they deem valuable. Filthy thieves.

I stand one strong AGAINST bio balls :) lots of people think they are going to do whats needed to make them work, but they often forget so IMHO bio balls are horrible to add to a reef tank
