I watched a DIY recently and he used plumbers putty and formed a circle around the area he wanted to drill and filled the area with water creating a reservoir. Then drilled through. It worked good.

You can also cut nearly through then go from the other side to finish it off to avoid chip out.
I do like the wood idea too.

yea but then all the glass dust gets stuck in the water in the "reservoir" using a hose or spraying will keep the water and the glass dust from forming a paste

i think if before he was using a garden hose clean up is not an issue =).

edit-you can also get like a 2x4 and cut a hole just big enough for you hole saw to fit through and clamp it to the side you are drilling and using that as a guide so the bit doesn't dance all over when you get started

ok wasn't sure. Someone mentioned glass bits around the cut-out hole. Also, with the plumber's putty and sitting water, overheating the saw should not be an issue. Just a thought.

for what it is worth....Tangster just drilled both my DT and sump tank and he used putty and placed some motor oil in the reservoir. Worked perfectly. A little extra tank cleanup is worth every little measure taken against cracking the tank.

    i wish you well!

    :)
