I think a good thing to do would be to start checking local animal shelters and rescues and see what small/medium sized dogs they have with mellow dispositions. And maybe you'll fall in love with one right there! Often times, mutts are the best dogs, because all the "issues" of the purebreds aren't there.

I think that a border collie would be good dog I know several people that have them in condos, but I have only had collie expierence.

Border collies are cute, but not good apartment dogs. Any herding/working dogs aren't good for small spaces, or when being kept inside a lot. They need a lot of exercise and mind stimulation.

Lot's of energy in a border collie.... Very smart too, so if not excercised a lot, they can get into trouble around the house to release their pent up energy.

a cavalier king charles or a long haired chihuahua

Cavalier king charles spaniels are excellent dogs for condos or apartments. They are easy to train, easy to care for, and they are very smart and social without being too hyper. I currently have a female long haired chihuahua that is excellent. She is very smart and not yappy like normal chihuahuas (this may just be her). She was also very easy to train and has minimal shedding. She weighs a whopping 4lbs so size is definitely not an issue and although she has a lot of energy she spends it herself with toys when we aren't taking walks.

I also have a male siberian husky who is my sweetie pie but unless you were dedicated to walking them a husky is not a good choice for an apartment. He loves to chew but he is the sweetest dog i have ever had and his "talk" is so endearing!

Very good point KC! I had planned to hit some shelters in NKY and around Cincinnati.

Cavalier king charles are nice looking dogs, but I promised a good friend that I would never have one. He had one for 13-14 years (aka Fat Patches) and after she died he swore neither him nor I would have one again.
