He is a German sheperd/akita mix, mabe some other things in thier to im not sure because i took him from a resque shelter.

I used to live out in the country & we didn't have a fenced in yard. We have since moved into town but still have our chocolate lab. I walked the dog around the yard(just along the parameter) about once or twice a day for maybe a month or two. Then we tried him out & let him off the leash. Look at that it worked. :) He walks around the yard & doesn't run away. He may wonder a bit beyond the property line but no farther.

You could also only fence a portion of it to keep the dog in.

I would walk him often, try to go new routes, if anything if he were to run away again he'll know his way around.

maybe you could build a dog run for him outside? Or don't leave him outside unattended.

I would think that if the dog was from a shelter it would have already be spayed or neutered,
As for the roaming dog as suggested befor I would also look into a fixed run from front to back yard.
