Ive been doing a lot of reading on a lot of sites that past few days, I am working on putting an aquarium information site together, already have about 50 pages written, but a lot of the sites I have gone to mentioon needing a gravel vaccuum in order to clean your substrate. this is not something that I do, I have a Clean up crew that takes care of that, but is it something that should be done?

I have a DSB and only vacuum the top 1/4" to 1/2" - has helped rid of cyano so far. But I also have HUGE CUC that does a good job - this is only my experience and my not be applicable to all situations.

I siphon my sand every time I do a water change, which is every 3 weeks. I have a 120 gallon tank with a custom CuC from John at Reef Cleaners.

Or if you have CC its a good idea to vacuum it, tends to trap a lot of gunk.

It depends what your CUC consists of. And of course what type of aand bed you have. I have 15 nassarius and 1 sea cucumber that do a fantastic job of keeping the sand clean. The only time I syphon my sand bed is when I have cyano bacteria, or something..

i lightly do the surface of the sand, and along the edge of the glass, i do all the way to the bottom, were it gets nasty looking.

It so interesting to see the different opinions on this,

I have a very strong CUC from reef cleaners, and it never really crossed my mind to vacuum it.
