no, but, the reactor is going to put it to its full potential, you can put it in a bag in a high flow area to get an effect, but not all the GFO will be touched when water passes through

It works best in a reactor when it is fluidized but you can use it in a bag in a Medium to Low flow area, not High flow since it will grind itself to dust with very much agitation. It is a very soft media so it does not take much to break it down. The disadvantage with bags is they catch detritus and debris so need to be kept clean. The reactor is best fed with a small 60-80 GPH pump like a MJ400 or Mini Jet 606 placed in a clean area like the return section of a sump and I use a sponge prefilter on my MJ400 to keep any detritus out of the media. A reactor fills from the bottom so the media is lifted, suspended or fluidized and most detritus will be lighter than the media and pass through keeping the media clean.

Theoretically it works better in a reactor. I've tried both ways, and really haven't seen any difference. In practice, it seems to work fine either way. I think perhaps it will last longer in a reactor, as the tumbling will keep it from solidifying. However, I tend to use less and change it out more often, so, that hasn't been an issue in my case.
