Fuge is short for refugium. I use my refugium as a refuge for pods free from preditors. Somewhere down the line in the past someone decided that it was a good idea to put algae down there to control nitrates and phosphate. Those coming up in the hobby now beleive that refugiums are prilmarily for growing algae.

I employ a different and IMO more efficient method for controlling nitrate and phosphate, I have no need to add the algae, therefore my refugium is only a home for pods.

The only thing in my refugium is a deep sand bed, live rock, sponges, and pods. My bio pellet reactor feeds water into the fuge and it then returns to the tank. I used to feed the pellet reactor to the skimmer as many do however over time I found that there was a huge population of pods living in my reactor living off the mulm from the pellets. At that point, I came to the decision to feed the fuge with the pellet reactor. Since then the pod population has exploded.
