I have my gravity fed return and it is all fitted PVC with two 90s and a few straight runs.

I would rather leave it unglued for easy disconnect if need be... But will this cause a leaking or excessive salt creep problem? There is no pressure on the lines

I think you will encounter leaks, maybe use plumbers tape if you don't glue? No experience in unglued returns.

I'd highly recommend gluing, and just add a union fitting where you think you might want to disassemble later.

If you dont want to solidly glue (like PVC bonding), I would at least consider a thin bead of silicon or something just for a little piece of mind and maybe it will give you a drip indicator before a major leak or blow out.

+1 Use PVC primer cement on all slip-joint PVC connections. Use 'plumber's' tape on threaded joints. Put unions in where you want to separate plumbing for cleaning/removal.
