Look into the finnex 4 gallons.

OR, the ecoxotic picos with LEDs. You could do an sps pico with a nice DIY ATO.

i was planning to do it mostly myself, i really want the look of a full blown reef tank with a stand and canopy only a smaller scale just like the ones in the links. i dont know if i would be able to make my own acrylic tank though. i will probably purchase a 2 gallont ank like in the link and just do a stand and canopy.

any tips on making my own tank? would that even be possible without insanely expensive tools? and the diy led, i wont need much light since it will be so small.

You could probably get glass and a glass cutter at any hardware store. A small enough tank would be easy to put together with simple silicone. Cutting glass isn't hard, just score, score, snap.

thanks for the input, what kind of silicone do you recommend? also for the wood for the stand should i just get some 2x2's for the frame and some thin sheets to make it look nice. also would staining the wood affect the tank negatively?

Depending on the tank size you could put it on just about anything. 2x2's would be fine or even just plywood. Staining would have no effect on the tank. For silicone any brand that is 100% silicone should be fine. Just make sure it's not tub and tile stuff. If it has anti mildew agents it will be detrimental to the tank. You can get aquarium silicone at most LFS's or petco/petsmart, but they run about triple price of 100% silicone.

Search diy stand builds on here and on google to get some ideas.
