You can run bio pellets in a reactor in place of vodka dosing. Similar concept. Both are a carbon (fuel) sources for de-nitrating bacteria. Vodka is dosed manually into the tank each day. Bio pellets are tumbled in a reactor to provide a constant carbon source for the bacteria. If you are away from your tank a lot, bio pellets may be the way to go.

I use to Vodka dose, always small amounts. I never got over 2ml/day for my 125.

Useing API, my nitrates always seemed to be 0.

I just stopped one day, after at least 3 months.

I couldn't detect any real change.

I think my abundance of corralline, plus a lot of Chaeto in my sump seems to work well.

When I got into reefing about a yr ago, I had already heard of these coils were old school way before that.

Before I switched to the bio pellets I used regular sugar. Seemed to work well...

This thread seems to quickly have gone off the DIY denitrator coil plan. Can we start a new thread on Vodka and I can close this out? Thanks

Actually I was thinking this was a Nitrate issue but I didn't title it that way :( I can't seem to get any direct answers anyway so YA go ahead Matt and close it and I'll be a little more specific next time. :)

    HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU - - - :)

I have used a coil denitrator..diy... never any trace amount of nitrates...but since I have had a fuge and cheato, plus a carbon reactor ..I have parked the denitrator..it was a simple siphon model....IME ...if you dont have a big bio load, you can use one or the other...or all...myself, I will not use vodka other than for martinis ..I prefer to use the more natural approach....seen too many bad results of mis dose of vodka...matter of fact I may put my coil back in the system...dont cost anything and it does work...and ime it dont/cant hurt.
