I have been answering reefing questions since before anyone knew what the WWW was. Back then it was Usenet and ARPAnet. I've kind of become lazy in my old age. One time, I swore I was not going to answer a single cyanobacteria thread for a year I was so sick of them. (I didn't even come close...maybe a couple of months at the most).

With that said, and I like the search feature, when you are a newbie, you don't know what to search for. That's a good solution but it's not all-encompassing. Some people are just takers. They join, get their question answered, and then disappear for 6 months until the next time they have a question. Well folks, that's just the way it is....they never have once intended to feed back into the 3Reef community, but that is their right.

Depending on what I have going on, my answer might be 5 words or it might be a couple of paragraphs describing what is going on in detail. I'm sure others behave the same way.

Good point. The search feature has answered some of my questions and not others. And I am guilty of not searching everytime also.

Well hey, I am sorry for starting my own out of control, non-reef related thread.

I have gone back and forth on this before. But for whatever reason, the economy, the cold weather, etc. there certainly has been a bit more lately static lately so I will remove the threads from showing up on the 3reef homepage starting now.

Well you had a decent point all the same.
Hey shouldn't this thread be in the Bucket? :cheesy:

I'm a newbie here. Also to salt. A little perspective.

I have a lot of hobbies. I belong to forums for everyone of them. Invaluable resource, just need to take e-opinions w/ a grain of salt. Every forum is the same. Newbies come in with the most kidergarden questions. I did on every one of them. After you have been around a while, and see how many times the same question has come up weekly, it gets old. Will this tire fit this lift, 9mm or .45, what kind of salt, how much hp will I get from this filter....

From my experience, kindergardners get answered by elementary students, which get answers from middle schoolers, which turn to high scoolers, and if the topic is interesting enough, the professors will step in and add to it. I have been, and done the same on every forum.

I will say that several times I have not had very good answers to simple questions here. So much so I have to go to other forums. However, I like this forum, and I know that I'm just a rookie, and there are many knowledgable folks here.

On any new forum, I take the time to research. I go back 10-20 pages to see if my question has been answered lately. I do a lot of searching, however, that has it's limits. Sometimes it takes quite bit to find info on a specific question since matches and titles do not always jive.

As far as arguing. Good luck with that. This is the net, just part of the game. Every forum I go to is the same. In fact I go to one site just to argue. I get it all out there so I am civilized on all the others.;D

You have a good forum here guys. I look forward to moving up in this hobby.

Hahaha, I was wondering what happened to my Japanese Fountain thread :hehe:. I guess I have to agree with JohnnyBoy and Otty, alot of questions can be answered by using the search feature. Also a lot of people might not get into topics if they dont have sufficient knowledge about the question or thread (including myself).

No worries. Anyway I should add my thoughts more here...

I have closed a few 'bashing' threads lately. I would really like to see an end to these type of threads. For one, they breed negativity. I am proud of the overall positive tone that has been achieved here at 3reef. Let's do our part to keep it that way please.

Also, as mentioned, let's not forget why this site is here. To help others and save some fish and coral along the way.

Thanks everybody.. I will leave this open for a while if you would like to add to it.

Personally I'd have to agree with some of the comments above about the fact that if they're answered once or twice, why do they need additional responses? And so many times these questions have been asked 10 times already, or more, and sometimes more than once in the same week!

I agree and think sometimes the lack of even the slightest bit of research before asking a question like "what do I feed my anemone" or "is this aiptasia, and how do i kill it" or "how do i lower my salinity" things that are soooo easy to google or search for on 3reef (because they've already been asked 100 times) tend to irritate me. Before I post a thread here asking something, I try my best to figure it out myself, which I feel I learn so much doing, and THEN ask here. Too many times, I believe, threads are used as the easy way out, as to not have to do anything but go to 3reef.com and do a quick post so research isn't required. Yes I know this forum is for discussion, help etc., this is just my personal opinion. I'm a newbie to the hobby and I still need help too, yes, I'm not denying that. I've been wanting to say this here for a while, blast me if you want. /end rant

And for the record, I always respond to help people if I know the answer, even if it could have been googled and answered in under 10 seconds. I owe it to everyone else for as much help as I have gotten here!
