I have 2 cannister filters on my discus tank.
I have asked this question before, but I got so many different answers !
I'm looking for what filtration systems are working for successful discus owners. The cleaning has not been a problem. It is just the filtration.

Twice a week, I do a water change where I vaccuum the food, off the bottom. I don't dig deeply because I don't want to disturb the mulm that feeds the plants. I cut off any dead on the plants & wipe down the inside of the glass to get rid of any slime created by the fish.

I also add Aquaclear & Florena ( plant food ) @ each water change. If you are unfamilar with Florena, you can google it.

I also inject CO2. Right now, I am getting maybe a bubble once every 30 sec so it may have to be changed soon.

My plants are nice & green, but are not growing. Am I overdosing ? Should I stick with the CO2 & forget the Florena ?

Back to the filtration system. I have 2 cannister filters running.

The first person to contact me said to fill each cannister with sponges & forget the charcoal & ammonia chips.

The second said too use the sponge & charcoal, but, in an established tank, ammonia chips were unneccessary.

Hey, you successful discus owners, what are you thoughts ?

    Thanks,
    Oceansurf.

With as often as you do water changes and your cleaning schedule you don't need ammonia chips. Use the charcoal if you want perfectly clear water. You probably need to increase your CO2 injection to get growth I doubt you are overfeeding.

Use the charcoal. It pulls chemicals out of the water.
