I just started adding sand and water to my 55 gallon hexagon tank this morning. The water is so cloudy that I can only see about an inch into the tank. Right now I have 27 gallons of water in it and and 50 pounds of sand (about a 2" bed).

While I'm waiting for the haze to settle out should I drop a small power head in to provide a little flow, or leave it alone?

The water level is not high enough to run my primary pump, still have to put the rock in and I figured I'd top it off after all that is in.

    Need some advice,

    Thanks all

I wouldnt put a PH in it will just keep all the dust suspended longer let it settle or get your filter running and make sure to change the mechanical part often to keep it running good.

I would finish dumping the rest of the water in then let it set for a couple hours with nothing. There should be no livestock in the tank so this will not hurt a thing. Let it settle down then worry about getting your hardware running.

If you used a good aragonite sand then its fine , Never rinse it just allow it to settle may take a week a power head will not hurt anything , What you see is a haze that many pay extra for called purple up and aragnamight ..both are additives expensive additives to replace the dust that is causing your haze..Set back and allow it some time..

I was thinking that when I add the 50 lbs of live rock, the water level was going to increase a lot, then I would top it off. Also, I wanted to be able to see what I was doing when I arranged the rocks so I was guessing that less water would clear up faster than more.

Don't really have a lot of extra water, so I can't afford to waste the 10-15 gallons (guessing) that I would have to take out if I filled it all the way up THEN added the rock.

I'm not trying to be argumentative at all, just on a bit of a tight budget for the next couple weeks.

Just curious...how long would you guess it will take to all settle out to a level that I could start arranging the rock? I am trying to avoid having too much suspended sand settle on the rock.

Thanks for your input Tangster, I know that patience is a big key in this hobby. I was starting to get anxious only because I bought my rock last night from an LFS about an hour drive from home and it rode the whole way in the bed of my truck. It was pretty cold (for Florida standards any way), yada yada yada, I was wanting to get it in the tank ASAP in hopes of not killing everything on it.

Looking at the tank now, it has cleared up noticeably in the last hour...should be clear enough to at least see what I'm doing when arranging the rock. If it's clear enough for me to see all the way through, is it clear enough to start with the rock or shoud I wait for some other benchmark before adding it?
