Hey everyone, How long was your diatom bloom on your tanks? I guess what I would like to know is if the one I'm experiencing is normal. I have had some amazing tanks but I haven't had to go through "new tank" in many years.

I wish I could help but I think I recall people saying it can last about 2-3 weeks?

^ I think this is about accurate. I've had my tank up for almost 18 days or so, and I've got diatoms outbreaking everywhere, except in probably the last 3 or 4 days I've seen phosphate bubbles and reductions in growth so it should go pretty quick, as soon as you see the alge starting to change and grow normal colors, then you should be near the end if not surpassed your tank cycle.

Thanks to both of you. I consider myself pretty advanced in this hobby and this was such a simple thing. I get paranoid sometimes that something may not be right.

A few weeks when I first cycled my tank. Every now and again I will have a smaller outbreak lasting about a week. They will disappear when the silicates in your tank are consumed.

It's alright I've been away from this hobby for almost 4 or 5 years, and I've had to ask so many questions, forgot everything, and more. Like I said I'm close to the end of cycle in my tank, coming up on almost 3 weeks now, and I've got massive silicates/phosphate bubbles all over the brown diatoms as of this morning; which to my knowledge are just algae nitrates. They've been evaporating all day though, just like sprite, and I haven't seen much more growth in the last 4 days, like gabbyr189 said. It's about a week or so on the diatoms, I'm about 3 weeks in but I started too see outbreak about day five or six starting the tank. All the bubbles are about diffused unlike this morning so I'm hoping I'll be home free here in the coming week.

Freaking hilarious....I started this thread yesterday and today, it is all nearly gone. I have probably 25% of the diatoms I had yesterday. The weirdest thing. I also have bare spots in my sump still from where I was screwing around in there a couple of days ago. (sump is brown too) It's clearing up and everything is looking amazing. I'm stoked about this tank.
