I just keep it to my only hobby so I'm not spending money on other things. I also don't do things that aren't necessary, like I'm not buying a nifty new phone even though its 100 dollars off because my contract is up. Saves me 50 bucks which about equals lighting for my Seahorse tank to be.

I have pondered this question for months. So much money goes into it, I think you just have to look deep into yourself and figure if it's worth it to you or not. If it comes to me not paying bills or keeping my family fed then of course the tank goes. But so far, so good. It really bothered me as I got on the Dave Ramsey plan but I have since realized that if my wife and I are more responsible with our money and don't waste it away on little meaningless things then there is plenty of money left over at the end of the month for the tank. Just like any hobby you have to put it into perspective and make a decision. In the big picture it means nothing, but if you make a grown up decision to have this hobby then you can be more at peace with yourself!!

PS... Otty mentioned the carbon from Tangster... it is the shiz!!! I use maybe 5 cups a year for my 55! And that is a high estimate...

Stop buying coffee each morning.. at say $2 a cup 5 times a week that's $10 a week or $40 a month.. That's a new coral or fish every month.

And for you smokers out there... hang that up and you could buy a new tank.

you can make any hobby cheeper it just depends on what you want to put into it. I made a lot of my stuff and doing so saved a ton. There are also ways around the expensive price of things if you are willing to wait.

While I would love to sit here and talk you into the wonderful world of saltwater aquariums I do have to say that if spending a couple grand in a years time on your 75 scares you, you might want to stay away. The spending is spread out but it will be done. I'm not trying to scare you away, I am just trying to let you know that you have to be dedicated in this hobby and like any hobby it takes a certain amount of time and effort, it just so happens that this one takes a good chunk of both!! It is worth it in the long run IMO!
