I added a coral banded shrimp to my tank yesterday and it died within 24 hours. I noticed about 4 hours after acclimation one of its claws had fallen off and he was messing with his other claw. Next thing I know his other claw is off. Immediately I did some research which said it could have been molting and that it was normal. Today I come home and it had tanked. I was wondering what it could have been. Also was him taking off his claws normal or out of stress or what?

how did you acclimate him? Shrimp are VERY sensitive to salinity swings...they need to be dripped until the salinity is the same. What is your SG?

this might sound stupid..are you sure it was the shrimp and not the molt? I have thought my shrimp died the first time I saw him molt

exactly how do you do drip acclimation right? I always think I do it right but probably not haha. It might have been the way he was acclimated. SG is just above 1.022. The whole molt thing is the first thing I thought of actually. I mean I thought it'd be hard for a coral banded shrimp to be overlooked though after I took the body (or molt) out of the tank.

I am relatively new at salt water but 3 times I have honestly thought our coral banded was dead. The molted skin has been colored with antennae and everything. Just food for thought. Check behind your rock work. We have a BB tank so I can see from underneath and sometimes that is the only way I can find him....and he is a good 4 or 5 inches including his antennae.

wow, i guess I'll have to look hard for a while and if he doesn't turn up, guess I'll try another later!

i too have a coral banded shrimp and he has molted twice. yes it looks like a dead shrimp. however if you witnessed him loosing his claws then there was something wrong with the shrimp to begin with. also many inverts prefer to have a higher salinity something around 1.025 or 6. Mine is 1.025 and shrimp is doing very well. I acclimated him by taking 1/4 cup out of the bag and adding 1/4 cup of my water. i did this every 5 minutes or so for 1 1/2 hours.
