This seems like an awesome concept, but if it truly is set and forget, what happens when pressure equalizes. Is there some kind of one way valve that would stop water from going out?

This just in....

The valve is not one-way, but we have tested the unit extensively and found that a one-way valve is not necessary to prevent water from coming out of the unit with this specific design. We will be releasing a video to show people that even after the unit "stops", there is no exchange of fluids between the valve. This is a result of the size of the valve opening as well as the length of the inflow nipple/valve assembly. The only way water would release the other direction is if water went over the sides into the unit (if not using cover) or through the overflow holes on the side, which could only happen if there is a significant amount of turbulence/flow along the surface of the water.

More just in...

The initial amount of water does matter...particularly in relation to the height of the water in the aquarium. Generally, the higher the water level in the aquarium, the more water is needed inside the First A.I.D. With very high aquarium water levels and very little water inside the unit, the box may be buoyed above the point where the sliding block and bracket can engage. Sufficient water needs to be added to the unit to allow it to submerge to the point where the bracket and sliding block can operate together.

For example, with the water at a fairly high level in the aquarium, maybe about 0.5" from the top rim (or the bottom of the Euro Brace, depending on the tank style), you will need about enough water to fill most of the angled portion of the unit. That's about 12-16 oz. or so. You can use less if the water in the aquarium is lower than that, since the unit won't be buoyed up as high (relative to the rim of the tank where the bracket is installed).

diagram #1 is the situation I was describing (relatively high water level, Euro-braced tank, not much water inside). Since the water level is high up relative to the bracket, when there is little water in the unit, the box is buoyed up too high to engage with the bracket. If you add more water inside to that same situation (diagram 2), the box will sink lower into the tank and thus will be able to engage the bracket. Diagram 3 shows that when the water level is lower in the tank, the amount of water required inside of the unit is less than if the water level in the tank was higher.
