Really appreciate all of your comments about this subject. Like I said, I decided to release him again... but mainly due to the fact that I was not sure what type of wrasse it was... Now my tank has been cycling for 6 weeks and ordered some green Chromis ...

Sorry about the hijack :) I completely understand why you felt that you had to release the fish. I was just wondering about why some folks are so dead set against adding wild caught fish into their tanks :)

Oh wow, why do I open a can of worms on almost every thread I post on?? Well Amcarrig, I should have actually worded that A LOT better than I did. My brain was spewing out words quicker than I could type, which get's me in trouble... I'm not against wild caught fish at all, that's what this hobby for the most part relies on. What I should have said was this -

Taking a fish from the wild without knowing it's requirements and care is IMO negligence, not trying to be mean at all. But when you don't even know what you are putting in your tank, it shouldn't be there in the first place. This can have unseen consequences from diseases/parasites and if the fish is poisoness, and you get stung, you can end up in the hosptial. When you go to a LFS, you can visually see the fish and how it is acting. The employee should have some general knowledge about it and if it is safe to handle or needs any special requirements. When you catch it from the ocean, you can't really study it like you would be able to in a store. So I guess I was just trying to warn him of the bad stuff you can get from the ocean, but it was not worded like that. Sorry Pelado, I should have said that better originally.

If you think that this thread is an opened can of worms, you haven't been on 3Reef for very long. We've had some doozies

Thanks for clearing that up though. I can certainly understand your concern regarding putting something that you're not familiar with in your tank. I did my fair share of that when I first started in the hobby many many (many) moons ago :D
