I'm confused as to how this differs from the fish that we find at our local fish shops, most of which are wild caught?

Well, you saw the posts from other members that don't think this is a good idea because of the possible parasites or diseases the fish might bring into the tank... but honestly, I just released him again because I don't know his specific requirements and want to make sure that my 110g new reef is set up perfectly!

I understand their concerns but I'm wondering why those same diseases and parasites wouldn't be introduced by wild caught fish that one would purchase at the pet shop.

Dunno but I am just following other's advice... plus I wasn't sure what type of wrasse it was and he's probably happy to be back in the ocean...

I think all of my fish were bred in captivity. Is there a rule where a LFS clerk is supposed to tell you whether the fish is wild caught or bred in captivity?
I guess I should ask next time I find one I like.

I agree with Amcarrig. I dont see any harm in catching wild caught fish legally. Its no different to what fish suppliers do anyway as previously said, most fish are wild caught.

Its a shame you let the other one go really - whats cool about the med, is since the suez canal opened fish from the red sea have migrated there. I only wish i could go catching my own, but alas i live in britain and the water is very cold.

There are also some who would argue that releasing a wild caught fish after having kept it in an aquarium could introduce diseases/pathogens into the wild that would not have been introduced had it not been kept in an aquarium.

I suppose there's arguments for and against everything and it's up to us to use our better judgment.

    interesting topic this

    my thoughts
shop purchased, wild caught fish, are they all held in QT prior to sale? I know Oasis the LFS I used to shop at in UK Manchester , had a policy of holding fish for a couple of weeks before putting them on sale, and this sometimes involved treating any parasitic infections etc
thus in that case purchasing wild caught fish from the LFS seems safer option than catching wild fish would be
although you could quarantine the fish yourself , prior to putting it into the main tank

if the wild caught fish is the 1st fish in the set up and is fit and healthy and parasite free before any subsequent additions are made . Then I believe thats also reasonably safe

one thing I am considering is, if you have captive bred fish, these fish may have not built up any immunity to some of the wild pathogens , diseases etc, so introducing wild caught fish into a tank with captive bred fish in it , is something I would fear doing (but maybe my fear is unreasonable?)

I've seen fish stores in my area sell fish that are still in the bags that they were shipped in. No quarantine at all.

Some would argue that the diseases/pathogens could be introduced to your tank via the addition of live rock/sand/corals

one thing I am considering is, if you have captive bred fish, these fish may have not built up any immunity to some of the wild pathogens , diseases etc, so introducing wild caught fish into a tank with captive bred fish in it , is something I would fear doing (but maybe my fear is unreasonable?)

Your fear is not at all unreasonable. In fact, I believe that this has become a concern regarding a lot of the captive raised corals that are being passed around. Mostly, I think, because there is no sexual propagation going on anymore, only propagation via fragmentation. This may lead to the corals developing weak/no immunity because there's no exchange of genetic material going on.
