Just curious what others opinion are about coral designer names. The reason why, is I got a frag from a LFS and he called it a Christmas Millepora, well basically the coral called Christmas millepora looks nothing like mine, and I have seen my coral on different coral distributor sites listed as a Sherbet Millepora and a Strawberry Millepora.

Does it seem right for someone to buy from a grower like ORA, grow the coral out, frag it and sell it under another name? Really it seems to me like if you bought it and grow it out you can name it Pink bunnies for all I care, but then I wonder shouldn't the original grower get credit for their development of the coral.

I guess my concern is I might want to at some time change the name of the supposed Christmas millepora since it does not seem nailed down, but I can see were that might be inappropriate.

    Any input appreciated.

They come up with the names so they can charge more IMO. Others then change it so they can do the same. It is the standard business model today.

I personally think its crap, but that is just me. I rather go by scientific or species names... and a standard color, Red Blue Purple Green Pink etc... Helps with me to figure out the care easier for the animal as well.

Makes it easier on my brain. :D.

I agree, I wish the scientific name was always included with the trade name.

Oh yea I definitely agree with going with say montipora digitata........... and such, scientific names.

Take ORA Red Planet for instance though, ORA basically started or named the coral and you see the same corals distributed, still with the name but without the ORA. Only once or twice have I seen a Red Planet called something else.

Reality is that many people buy based on designer names, especially for zoanthids and paly, now mushrooms and ricordia.

If I decide to change the name of my Lunar Eclipse Palys to Arizona Sunrise would I be not following proper reefer etiquette, just speculating.

All that is true, but you also gotta remember that in every tank there is alittle morph-no matter how slight it is(even if you can't notice it) so in reality if you grow a coral out and frag it then you have the right to name it cause it'll be your moprh

I know I am probably just being girl over sensitive but it just does not seem right to me, kind of a gut feeling I guess. With that said maybe I will get over it if my Arizona Sunrise Palys sell for $30.00 a head. ;D
