Just bought an established aquarium from a craigslister. I'm not the techie in the group here, but the light that it came with was on the out. So we bought a new fancy light (don't know, has daylight, dusk (blue light) and LED moonlight settings) and cost a buttload so it's pretty good, I think!

We also bought a ton of live rock because most of the existing rocks seemed to be dead rock and not doing much. We now have too much rock in there, this we know, so we'll be rearranging. We'll also be expanding the pump/filter area.

Please excuse, most pics are with camera phone. If you have suggestions, please let us know! We are super newbies!!! Also...can you help with coral identification??? I'll put down my guesses.

Some kind of tube with a fan/fern thing that comes out at night:

    A button polyp????

A green striped mushroom and ????? What is that pink coral to the left? Couldn't get a good pic.

NO CLUE...this is like a dark pink blob....it's kinda hard, seems to be shedding at the moment.

We have two of these purpley trees??? Here's the maroon clownfish as well. Also, is that a form of brain coral in the back? the white one?

Thanks for looking!!! :) We are proud new parents!

    Congrats!

The first coral is a feather duster. Super easy, you dont have to do anything for him. He filter feeds.

For your sump-remove the blue balls (bio balls) they can cause problems in regards to nitrates. Put live rock in there to help grow good bacteria.

You also need a hang on back protein skimmer (hob). An internal or external would be better but your sump isn't designed for that

Congrats on the New purchase! As RJT said the first one is a feather duster, this tube worm is pretty hardy and easy to keep. The second looks like some type of paly to me ( I am not an expert). The third one is a Mushroom like you said and the pink thing I am not quite sure what it might be...looks like some type of leather coral? Others will probably chime in. Fourth I have NOOOO idea so I am going to defer to people with more experience ;)
And last but not least a Kenya Coral...and in the background it looks like the skeleton of a Brain ;)

Thanks guys!!! Yeah, our local marine fish expert said the bio balls would be ok for a while, but we want to eventually get the live rock in there.

    Reef4life:

Thanks for the ID help! A paly...it does look like pics of that coral...ours doesn't look so healthy though. :( He's looking kinda wilty. Will have to do some research on his care -- maybe he doesn't like so much light?

This weekend we'll try to work on the reefscape -- ooohh...new word I learned reading this forum! :)
