what type of HOB skimmer is it, one of the cylinder types or a box type

some people with HOB skimmers just mount them on the outside of the sump rather than spend money on a new skimmer, if the sump is an add on to a existing system
but that does rely on there being adequate space between edge of sump and cabinet

I plan on doing the same thing with my HOB skimmer when I get my sump set up, I plan to just hang the skimmer on the side of the sump right where the water enters the sump. since the water coming in will be skimmed right off the top of the water so all the water that enters will be skimmed before it enters the other chambers of your sump. Thats just what I want to do.

Some are not meant to be in a sump and will not work in a sump.
When it is submerged the pressure inside will change and may cause it to not work properly. It all depends on the design of your skimmer, so just keep that in mind
