I'm using Red Sea Coral Pro salt and they recommend a salinity of 1.023 for soft/LPS corals. However, I read several posts where 1.026 is recommended for corals in general. Does anyone have any feedback on 1.023 versus 1.026? Thanks in advance!!

I'd say 1.023 is fine for softies/LPS, you'll want 1.026 for SPS for higher parameter levels like calc, if its FOWLR or softies only, ya can def do 1.023 or slighlty below

Not sure what you mean by "...mixes at 1.023". The back has three different salinity recommendations (@77F):
    1.021 for fish, non-coral inverts
    1.023 for Soft/LPS corals
    1.025 for SPS/Giant Clams

    +1 Absolutely.

FYI, NSW is 1.025 - 1.027; ALL of our wet pets come from NSW, in which they also have evolved for hundreds of thousands of years or more. As far as I care, there is no logical reason or scientifically provable benefit in changing the SG from that of NSW for any of them.

NSW salinities vary by region. John posted a good chart about this.Salinity also changes with the tides.Especially in areas close to river mouths.Heres some good info on salinity.Hopefully John will chime in with his chart so you can see how much salinities can vary.

The ocean acreages about 1.026. long term, a deviation of more than about 10% is show to increase mortality in many studies. So, on the low range, that would be about 1.023. Unfortunately, there are a lot of old myths that still persist in the hobby and are not based on the facts.

I keep all 4 of my tanks (2 reef, 2 FOWLR) at 1.025-1.026. Figured it made sense to keep fish at the NSW level as well.
