I am applying to two colleges for next fall semester. I have asked two of my teachers to write me letters of recommendation. One requested bits of info about myself that he can put at the bottom of his letter. So, what should I be telling him about?

    Right now I have...

    Hobbies: photography, bicycling, saltwater aquariums

    Interests: art/design, marine science

School Activities: Tiffin Columbian Blue and Gold Yearbook club

Accomplishments: 2 time, regional winner in the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition

I would also add what have you done with the yearbook, what impact is has on the school and the students.

Do you volunteer? if so where, what was the cause and effect of this?

You being a two time winner, how many hours have you spent in order to win? Does it get published, if so where? by winning are you able to give your abilities to help others be more successful? Also try to tie it in with that college so that you can make them look good!

This is the military in me and when I have to right my evaluations every 6mnths I try to write the big picture and the impact I have, how much money I saved, what accomplishments were completed etc.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

The two colleges are Columbus College of Art and Design and the Ohio State University. CCAD is an art school, so that's where the art awards play in. This is the largest and most competitive art show for high school in Ohio.

Yearbook - I am a photographer and page layout designer (err..I forget the correct term right now).

I haven't done much volunteer work. Just working at an assisted living/nursing home for two summers, going with residents on outings. I helped them get around and also served food.

I don't have a job, but have been am looking...

If I go to CCAD, I would be majoring in industrial design. OSU, I would possibly double major in industrial design and biology.

Well, for the art school, my personal statement had to be about my goals. I think that's about worn out. lol. Maybe I could ask another teacher to write a recommendation for OSU.

    Hi Seano;

That is an exciting time when it comes to picking and applying for colleges.

JMO, but the main thing is really to give all and any information about extra curricular activities you have participated in, which it seems like you have. Explaining how you feel these have prepared you for future studies is always a good bonus--I don't think it has to be anything lengthy, even a sentence or two of what you feel are the significance of your accomplishments in that regard would be good.

The only other thing you may consider is if you have any second language skills or other certifications. For example, are you a certified diver? If so, you may mention that as well as it demonstrates your ability to learn and succeed in a structured learning environment.

I wish you the best of luck! I hope you stay connected to 3Reef throughout your studies as well as I am sure there are plenty of folks on here who would be more than happy to lend you any guidance as you narrow down a chosen field, etc. For example, I went into college planning on getting into aeronautical engineering. I ended up no where near that field and I have personally been very happy with that choice.

In the end, the best advice I can give is just study what you enjoy, and try other courses that you are curious about. You never know where it may take you.

Best of luck kiddo! You are going to do great!
