I'm thinking of trying 2.5" x 16" tall... just to see if it'll work.

2.5" is too less. min 3" coz there needs to be some space for the bio media. well i had read somewhere, that 1 guy made two seperate bins 1 for placing coil and 1 for bio balls. not being able to find that thread. but that was for a 300gallon tank.

With a 29 gallon total volume, I think I can manage enough media to be worth it. And I do have extra BioBalls available (free). I'm not sure how much surface area is needed, but 3" wouldn't really fit in my first chamber, rendering the project useless anyway.

on for intanks it would be great. im thinking about mine. too much confusion. even some suggest dosing carbon and some say not needed. as the carbon is to be dosed directly in between the main bio media which is difficult to add in diy reactor.

I don't see why not. I decided to get the most out of it to build an external unit I can hide under my tank and just feed the input/output lines into the tank via the back... and they're black so they're easily hidden. I'm using 2.5" tube for the coiling and 3" tube for the housing. I was able to wrap up over 50' of tubing without that much height on that size.

how many coils are you planning? I did a single coil and my PVC is probably 18"+.... 75' was too much. Granted, I used 3" pipe
