benefit= good flow and no powerheads to look at

Cons= cost of electricity with a pump versus the low wattage powerheads, with new powerheads like korallia evos and the sicce voyager, you can get a fully randon wave maker for very little, a lot less than an oceans motions valve and the expensive pump. Also, with a CL, you can have some pretty horrible cleaning to do. With powerheads, you simply take them out, and clean them.

If you want to have no cords in the tank, a wave box or vortech is the way to go. Those cost more though.

I like a natural tank. Evo's are good but still in the way. I will go with these if I can't afford others.

For cleaning couldn't you clean it with a "pipe scrubber?" ? Like some use to clean out power filter intakes?

If I can afford it cl would be nice.

What about a DIY closed loop? drill the holes, attach pvc & bulkheads, add pump.. Not that simple?

i would lean against it. I have one and am shutting it down after my move for sure. Its a pita, plus you need some serious water pressure to get it right.

Another way to create flow an an aquarium. It takes place of powerheads. It can be costly, as mentioned above sense you need high powered pump to do it.

A series of holes in your back wall of the tank go to a pump & then water goes back to the tank.

But it will hide equipment, in the tank, giving a more natural look, as you see no powerheads. Just search closed loop on the forum & a whole bunch of results should come up.

i was going to go with a CL but decided against it after seeing all the headaches from cleaning. if i had a HUGE tank perhaps something like 500gal and the financial pocketbook to support it id totally use a CL. with something small like a 75gal tank id use koralias on a timer or a *drool* vortech mp40w-ES.

plus you have to design your CL so you can clean it. i read someones post on another forum that they wound up drilling 4 holes, putting in all the plumbing, gluing it all together before realizing they didnt have valves to stop water from coming back into the CL during a pump clean. i dunno, if you go with one, make sure you design it appropriately for your needs and take all factors into account.
