    I just got Chemi-Pure from my local store, got 2 units for my 55 gal and I just want to say its the best stuff I have used yet, because on the second day of having used it, I noticed how crystal clear the water is and my PH was at around 7.8 and now its at 8.2.

    It seems to be nothing more than crushed charcoal but it does seem to work well. Maybe there's more to it.

    Your are correct! There is more to it. From the site; "Chemi-pure can be used with all water types as a chemical absorption filter and ion generator and exchange unit to positively keep pH at a perfect constant level." Go to Boyds' site to read more.
