Hmmm. I have also been using Chemi-Pure for a long time and have never had a bad reaction :)

Hate to say this, but are you sure the 50% water change didn't cause the problem?

Also did you thorougly rinse the Chemi-Pure first?

Well....I already went down that road. I dose Iodide and Essential elements after the coral started shriveling. Great minds think alike. I also put in a little Coral Accell. The Iodide and Coral Accell has worked great for me in the past.
I just went home for lunch and they look a little better but are still dark in color. I will take out the Chemi-pure tonight and add poly filter pads.
    Thanks for the help guys.

Yes....I know 50% is alot but I had bad rezen in my DI for a while and wanted to get all the bad stuff out. Guess I should have done 2 smaller changes. I have seen them shrink down after adding carbon before but only for a short while. They are discolored with blotchy tan and brown areas. I also have been moving them around while fragging them last weekend. I have about 10 or stocks. But they looked ok after then.

I am willing to bet that the large change in water params caused by the water change of 50 percent, coupled with the chemipure pulling all of the necessary trace elements out of the water, is the culprit in this situation.

hey i dont know how you are doing now bc this was posted 4 years ago, but if you didnt oxygenate your water before adding your salt, you completely removed the buffering capacity of your salt.

I have 2 frags of xenia and one sits on the sandbed happily and the other is attached to the wall near the top of my tank (it just grew like that). The one thats on the wall almost always looks like crap, while the one on the sandbed looks perfect. I chalked it off to too much flow on top because it was thrashing around.

You probably did more than a 50% water change. Taking into consideration the live rock and sand (not knowing if you have a sump) you may have done a 65% or better change and threw everything out of whack. I would add some live bacteria to bolster the biological filtering capacity. Chemi-pure is fine and doesn't take out any more trace elements than carbon will. Buy a quality oyster egg and phyto plankton supplement and feed the Zenia a couple times a week for two weeks and it should come back.
