AFAIK sumps are just not cheap, if it is cheap I would be concerned it was made with acrylic that is too thin or some other cheap material. The cheapest way to make a sump is just to convert a glass aquarium and put baffles in yourself, it's not too terribly difficult. There's lots of info on melev's site about baffle placement etc.

If you want a nice, cheap and effective sump, use a rubbermaid or similar "toughbox".

I used a 17g one as a sump on my 90g and it worked great. I used LR for "baffles" to keep microbubbles from going in my return pump.

Otherwise, get a rubbermaid agricultural trough from tractor supply or similar stores if you need a big one. Those ag troughs come up to like 150gallons, maybe bigger.

or build your own sump for relatively cheap. Buy a standard glass breeder tank, go to your local hardware store or plastic store and have plex cut to fit inside the tank, silicone the baffles into place and have a custom sump that not only cost you pennies compared to what you will pay for one online, but it also built to your specs. And, the ultimate feeling of knowing you just saved yourself a ton of cash AND built it yourself :)

BTW - my sump cost me less that 10 bucks.

    Two rubbermaids.

That might be nice for a nano, but not for a tank that is around 55g or bigger.

I had a 12g acrylic sump on my 35g. That worked fine since the sump was in the stand.
