Currently on my 120g with a 10-15g sump I do 25g water change bi weekly. My nitrates are usually almost at zero. Was wondering if I could go to changing water every three weeks with the 25 gallon change. Would this make parameters more stable or less, just looking for thoughts as I was thinking maybe I'm making too many water changes...the tank isn a mixed reef.

You don't HAVE to change water for no reason, either you are trying to remove something or add something. If you think you are doing neither then don't do it.

But for stability, you will have less doing one 25g change every three weeks. You need to be doing weekly changes even if it is small. Large changes less often are more of a shock.. salinity, temperature, stirring stuff up, draining more out. You don't have to do huge volumes, but anything you do should be small changes, large ones are not so great.

Do less volume the same amount of time. That way you replace the trace elements just as often but don't have to do such a large amount.

    Agreed.

Although its not saltwater, I just actually did too many water changes in my amazon planted tank. I was trying to drop the ph because I was using well water ran through prefilters before I got an ro-di unit. I did around a seventy percent change in 5 days and my tank just developed nitrates that I havent had in years. Oh well. No discus for a little longer, but I do believe its possible to change the water too much.
