i read once you start useing 1 sorta salt you stick with it but i was reading some1 tread in showing of tank area that she had switch salt and it was better. im not haveing problems with the salt im useing but if there is a better one out there id rather use that. im useing instant ocean like she was then she changed to red sea pro. so whats the verdict on this.

It all depends on what you keep in your tank. If you are happy with your testing results and how things are looking in the tank, then no need to chamge imo.

i just went to a fish store online and found out that instant ocean has the reef crystals. since my dt is a reef would there be any harm in switching to the reef crystals?

What type of reef do you have? If it's all softies, mushrooms, and/or polyps, then you don't need to change. If you have or plan on getting LPS or SPS corals in the near future, they will need the additional cal, mag, and alk in reef crystals or red sea coral pro. If you do switch, I'd suggest sticking with your routine water changes with the new salt as previously mentioned.

You will def have to start doing water changes if you are getting into sps, or start dosing. We don't do water changes to get fresh water in there, if so then top offs would do. We do water changes to export nutrients and to replenish trace elements that are used up in our systems. As I said there are other ways of exporting nutrients and replenishing trace elements but that might be for another thread.

You would dose elements that your tank needs, calcium for example. But first you need to do lots of research and never dose for anything that you are not testing for.
