I have a 29 gallon hex tank and I am considering changing from a hanging filter to a canister filter. Is there anything special I need to do when changing over to the new filter?

You will have to stay on top of your maintenance. They need to be cleaned out at least once a week IMO. When you switch over dont take the hanging filter off. Leave it for a couple of weeks while the canister populates with bacteria.

one way I have also done this is to take out the filter media on my existing filter and put that into the new filter ( I was upgrading from an internal cannister to an external one which was larger - so I just took the sintered glass rings I had been using in the internal cannister and put them along with new rings into the tray of the external, and then new media in remaining trays)

that way I was still running my established biological filter but just in a new casing really
