I have been teatering on the notion of applying one of these creatures into my aquatic world...at any cost necessary.

    [BLUE RINGED OCTOPUS]
    or
    [BROADCLUB CUTTLEFISH]

Do any of you have a synopsis on the stipulations surrounding bringing this kind of challenging safari through the undersea into my home....

Your deep thought on the matter is greatly appreciated.

they are both short-lived so always go with the eggs and hatch them out yourself.

With the cuttlefish, you risk getting bit which hurts as their beaks are quite sharp

With the blue-ring octopus, not only are they short-lived, if you get bit, you are also going to be short-lived as there is no antidote for their toxins.

There is a great article in a magazine I was reading yesterday at Borders. It was a marine and reef magazine (there are only like 3 Aquarist magazines as far as I know) so you might want to check it out. It goes into the taxonomy of the different species available and specifically calls out the blue ring oct as being not just a bad idea but a terrible one for the same reason inwall75 called out. They are highly poisonous and can KILL you. Are the beautiful? Very.. but the risks far outweigh the benefit of having one in your tank.

Check out Luna's Octopus Thread. I believe there's some info on the difference between octos and cuttles in there...or somewhere.

Based on what I've read about the two, I vote cuttlefish. Cuttlefish are more animated and energetic, and still super smart. Octos hide and look cool. I'd rather have the dog than the cat ;)

from what I understand is cuttle fish don't live more then a year or so and need a fairly large tank. I watched a special on how smart they were and they have a very large and inteligent brain.
The blue ring I wouldn't take the chance on killing my self with there poisen/toxin.

The blue ring is a TERRIBLE idea. No offense, were just looking out for your safety.

I had an octopus and let me just tell you they are very very awesome, feel free to look at me thread for some info on how i kept him and feel free to ask me any questions personally, with that said a blue ringed octopus is a bad idea for the reasons previously mentioned (toxins especially). As far as the cuttlefish goes the need alot of room and a tank location where people will not jump out and scare them because they have a reflex which cause them to jet away and they will often damage themselves on the side of a tank or on the bottom getting a friction "burn" of sort which may later lead to infection and eventual fatality also seeing as they are invertebrates copper based medications will kill them and i do not know of anything that will treat them effectively, with all that said they are amazing creatures to keep and although challenging they can be very rewarding
