It is probably more like I am a clean freak and hate seeing slimey crap LOL
Kind of like mechanical filters to me....garbage traps until it can't hold more and spills all that crap back in the tank and then here come the GHA or cyno

I know I'm not on the level of expertise as many here But It amazes me why anyone would want to use a filter sock or any filter even in you are trying to maintain a coral reef aquarium , On a Fish only then they are fine and have a valuable place as any good low micron filtration system .. But with any reef your corals are the filter socks ..

If you would add a large power head on a timer to stir up your sumps at night time as that is the main feeding time for corals then you would find less need to feed or filter the system.. Fish waste is great and their left over bits of food is the best coral food Its all part of marine snow..

    Here is my process

      1. rinse dirty sock in water
      2. hangout to dry
      3. when I have 10+ rinsed socks
      4. throw in the washer hot with 1/4 cup bleach
      5. extra rinse cycle
      6. soak socks in ro with Prime chlorine remover 24 hours
      7. hang out to dry
      8. store once dry
I have about 25 socks I rotate out about every 5 to 7 days. Seem to last 6 to 8 months or more. Had a few need there seem sewen back up.

I also turn off my return pump during feeding for anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Think this is another topic that people either agree or do not agree on using them based on how their system is setup. :)
