Hello. I've got two FOWLR aquariums, both with a pH of 7.8, and can't seem to get it up any hight. I regularaly used the B-Ionic two part supplement, but with no apparent effect. I've also tried Brightwell pH8.3, also with no apparent results. I don't have a KH/Calcium test kit. Can anybody recommend a good Alk buffer that will raise my pH to where it should be? Thanks!

Get an alkalinity, a calcium and a magnesium test kit. You should have a test kit for whatever you dose. The magnesium is to test if your alk is low. Magnesium seems to help stabilize pH and alk when in the right range. Most salt mixes skimp on magnesium. Try Seachem Marine Buffer.

Why are you using a two part on a FOWLR system? That could be part of your problem. If you have too much calcium in your water your alk and pH suffer.

Ummm, it was my understanding that calcium played a role in maintaining proper pH. I had no idea that too much could be a problem. I have quite a bit of live rock & also CaribSea live sand I would have thought would help contribute to the calcium.

    Another potential thought:
    – Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide converts to Carbonic acid which lowers PH. Rather than attempting to better explin let me just give you a link to Mr. Randy Holmes. If nothing else I am cetain you will enjoy the read.
