    Hey 3reefers, I am thinking up different ways to make a sump. My tank is not drilled so I need an overflow. I was thinking if it would be possible to use the Fluval 405 I have sitting around to move water to the sump/fuge and avoid a HOB overflow.

    What do you thnk?? :)

    No it will only work as a sealed unit. (for pressure build up for the return)

    It would still be sealed, I'll just have the return t'd off for the sump and the fuge and use a pump to send water back to the display.

    Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen!!!
    the problem with this is getting the to pumps to run equal and constant.
    Best of luck

    You either have to drill the tank or use a HOB overflow .. Siphon will kill you and there is more reasons to use the surface skimming overflow then many think about.. You have to skim the water from the very top 2 inches of the waters surface.. Thats why people who try to get by with drilling a few bulkheads along the tank at the water level always find their skimmers don't skim that well and the water surface has a have of oil and lint on it all the time..

    if u do what i think yer gonna try and do u can expect either flooding or running a pump dry and thus killing it and causing a flood

    repeat this will not end well!

    Been there don't work well DANGER!

    HI,
    Tried to increase water turnover weak pump for return, SO I boosted the return with a marineland, taking water from the sump to the tank using and exisiting overflow.
    It works great till the power's off then you have a line running to the sump the pump will allow a siphon and it don't take long to float the sump and flood your floor.even with a air gap it will run backwards thru the pump to the sump.
    LAst year the power went of several times a month due to weather/ storms.
    You'll be swimming..::)
