Canister w/ only chemi-pure???

I was given a Rena XP1 and I was wondering if I could use it with just Chemi-pure? So no filter floss, sponge or any other media. Will I still need to be religious in cleaning it so it doesn't become a nitrate factory?

its a good idea IMHO
but yes, as floating particles will be collected and then trapped in the cannister
a fortnightly rinse is a good idea IME
in addition the effectiveness of the chemical media will be compromised if the detrius is allowed to accumulate on the mesh bag its in, blocking the pores, so thats another good reason to routinely rinse it

I remove my purigen weekly and rinse off the mesh pouch for the same reasons

Awesome...thanks! So basically what you're saying is to just rinse the chemi-pure bag once a week and rinse the canister every 2 weeks...correct?

welcome - you could do both fortnightly if thats your water change routine
your tanks nitrate levels are the best indicators of your maintenance practices IME, if the nitrates start to increase, then increase your cleaning frequency

I use a canister filter for chemi-pure and use filter floss. I change the floss every 2 weeks and the chemi-pure every month. Works great for me.

An with that schedule you have your nitrates in check? I think that is the schedule I will do as well.

 

Yes that and learning not to feed my fish way too much. I think I:'ve made it to just too much. LOL
