I understand that turkey basting live rock is good regular maintenance. BUT IF you were to neglect doing this for a long period of time, then blasted A LOT of detritus off of them. Could this introduce so many nutrients back into the water column that would cause GHA to grow much faster than normal?

I would still think it would help by getting it into the water column so it has more of a chance to be picked up by your filtration and cuc.Leaving it in the rocks would just help keep feeding the algae.

I wouldn't think so. The detritus on the rocks is still going to be leaching nutrients into the WC anyways. Stirring it up would like Grinder said, give it a better chance of having the Filtration or the CUC finding it.

Thanks for replies guys. I do not disagree with your answers, I feel that I'm to new to that. lol
Here's a little background. I recently cleaned up some detritus in my sump. After that my GHA seemed to be dying.
Then I thought about blasting the rocks. After I did the GHA seemed to really take off again.
So now for the last couple of weeks I've been cleaning them a few times a week. I've been manually removing it, and I bumped up my GFO use.
I'm just trying to put a finger on what caused the resurgence?

The detritus breaks down into disolved organics (aka-nitrates and phosphates and just plain organic waste aka-algae food) yes it would feed the algea either way,but basting your rockwork gives you a chance to get alot of that out with your skimmer, filter, and right before a water change BEFORE it breaks down into algae food.Bacteria and cuc will take care of the rest in a balanced tank.

No prob, and good luck.GHA isn't a hard fix, just takes a little effort and patience to get you water cleaner.
