Could you not use natural spring water and then add salt?

A friend of mine in his infinite wisdom listening to too many people on forums has used both tap and well water. Both times he ended up with terrible algae problems that killed a bunch of corals and took a long time to get under control.

Always use RO water when you can and in the meantime, put $10-20 a week in a savings account so you can buy your own RO-DI unit in a few months. They pay for themselves over time and its totally worth it. Then if you can do an automatic top off even better, your life will be worry free.

Adding tap or well water may seem okay for awhile, but once a nutrient problem develops it can be almost impossible to get rid of especially if you have a sandbed.

I currently drive 45 miles to my LFS to get RODI water for changes.

With what you spent in gas and purchasing the water you could have bought an RODI unit.

    Co-Sign that :cheesy:

Running a Reef without RODI is like trying to watch tv without the remote

not a good analogy but you get the point

or maybe its like trying to get customer service at walmart

or like using a pc without a mouse

or like trying to cut your own hair

    lol..its my day off ;D

Is there any type of filter you can put on tap water to be able to use it? I know there are RO systems; but, what about anything from the local "Lowe's" or "Home Depot".

    I Cut my own hair...
I use Unix, thus no MOUSE is needed for my computer
I know how to request customer service at Walmart and get it...

Are you trying to make fun of me?
    I'm not impressed..

    *snicker*

I have a home purification system, not RO but hey..... RO aint removing those pills people flush down the toilet... And once I started using my own water and not that ro/di from the LFS - my algae bloom went away.. ALso killing the lights for a few days helped. lol

Using tap water is not a good idea, too many things in there that will mess it up. I have a purification system and had it tested against the ro/di water I was using from the LFS and the only difference is that the chlorine and flouride still existed in my water when it was not in the ro/di .. i'm safe, i'm not stressing it. Fish with white teeth, meh - makes me wish I had a shark now..

LOL sharks with really white teeth! I've been checking into RO systems. I want to get that put in place before I do anything. This time I don't want to run miles and miles to get RO water.

Using tap water is like taking your girl to Burger King instead of Red Lobster, you mayyy get lucky.. slim chance. Always go with the sure bet, and score yourself some points. Better results in the long run.

Do you have one of those giant filter systems for our house?
if so is it better than ro/di water?
