What about the balance of overflow to pump? obviously i want the overflow to have the higher rating to prevent floods. Would there be any problems with getting an overflow that is WAY overrated for the return pump i would use ?

I just use a plain vanilla standpipe. The height of the standpoint is just below the wall in the overflow. It's nice and quiet. No gurgling. I thought for sure when I upgraded my pump I would get noise but so far so good. I started out using a Hurfer Gurgle Buster design (sp) but I had problems with algae and nori getting trapped in it. Found that raising the standpipe did the same thing. Like others said you need to make sure that the end of your drain is underwater. Make it a T fitting with the drain going in the water and a vent going vertical out of the water so the bubbles can escape.

I dont think there would be any problem have a overflow that can out perform your pump but, you could get a bigger pump and put a pvc gate valve in there to slow the flow and get a perfect match ( or close to it) and get the most performance out of your sump. i think having the overflow faster than the pump would probably create noise anyway.

the gate valve from the pump to balance the flow is a great idea. I also agree the overflow out "flowing" the pump would create more noise. is there any danger of loosing siphon with an over rated overflow?

there is always a danger of loosing a siphon but if you have it properly set up you shouldnt have to worry about it unless air gets in there. slow flow would allow bubbles in the u tube anyway.

I don't hear much of anything in my refugium/sump. I know that durso standpipes help a lot. My dual overflows go into a chamber that has bioballs in there to break down the bubbles. I know this works because I tried running it without the bioballs and there were a lot of bubbles. This water goes into my refugium where it is slowed down a bit and falls into a chamber with a sponge. I added a piece of floss and that quieted it up and I just replace the floss every 2 or 3 days. Then it goes into the sump where I have a mag7 return pump and a Marine Pro 300 in sump protein skimmer where the water muffles any noises. It works for me.:cheesy:

I put a towel over my skimmer. I don't hear a thing now.

Current fission...the big one rated for like 300 gallons or something rediculous. Its a recirculating skimmer.

The pump is just loud as....

also a poor design. I think i could make it quieter with some plastic washers and couple hours or tinkering. Im just gonna get a dif one in a few months tho i think

....i will try a towel, but ill be shocked it that makes a difference.

There is an upside though.... i cant hear my wife yelling at me or telling me what to do while i work on the tank... which im doing more and more :)
