Matters what your budget is and if your tired of dosing all the time. With a 50g it may be overkill unless you have a sps dominate tank that eats a lot of Ca. They are nice to have, I would not run a reef without it. Just really depends on your budget.

+1 cal reactor is a great thing to have on a reef tank I myself have one just sitting around awaiting my next tank, as my 55gl is just not consuming that much calcium to warrent setting it up.

I wouldn't even bother shopping for one yet. Wait til you have corals that way you'll have time to think about it and see what your calcium draw is.

if you are staying with softies then most likely you will waste your money on a calc reactor. more then likely you can get by with weekly water changes!
now if your adding clams and say half and half lps & sps / softies then I would look into either dosing or getting a reactor but just for a couple sps I wouldn't waste my money as you can over dose with nothing int he tank to eat up the Ca. you can always set your reactor on a timer as I do. to control the amount added to the tank. and top off with Kalk to keep the Ph up.

there are lots of ways I would choose what best fits your tanks inhabitants and go from there.

I do but I use in conjunction with GFO for phosphates. per my test kits they read zero on 3 different kits never tested with a hanna meter. I know I have some phos. in the tank as for why my hair algea bloom kicked in when I didn't change my rodi filters. but I like to run carbon but it needs to be changed out reguarly. carbon helps with clear water and getting contaminats out of the tank. some say it also adds phos to the tank I am not sure on that part.

Most people around here use carbon. I have to use it to keep the odor in check. I have min e in a reactor but it will have some effect simply in a mesh sock in a high flow area. It will be more effective in a reactor. I change it about every 6-8 weeks.
