i was thinking of getting some acropora corals. do i really need a cal reactor? do these corals suck the calcium out of the water or something?
i have a 55g tank and perms are on the dot.

Not at all. CA reactors can be useful if you have massive amounts of calcium sucking coral in your tank, but for just a few acros, it's not going to be worth it for you. Just plan out your dosing schedule so that your levels stay up between water changes. Also think about getting on a salt mix, if you're not already, that has higher levels of alk and cal. This should help you out a bunch in keeping it going.

    +1

I have a larger number of SPS and clams in my tank and just use 2-part dosing.

Do you dose anything? What salt mix are you using? What are your Calc, alk and mag levels?

2-part dosing is a daily dosing regiment where you dost calcium and alkalinity at the rate at which the corals/inverts use it up.

Test the water and calculate on their website how much you need to get to the desired level. Next day test again and see how much you "lost" Dose again and keep going this routine for a week or so until you are really sure how much to dose. Of course if you start stocking your tank again you might have to adjust the dosing again.
My tank uses up 35mL worth of Cal and Alk solution daily, so I dose 35 mL of Calc and 35 mL of Alk solution in the mornings useing the BRS dosing pumps on my Apex.

What are your Alk, Calc, and mag levels? If one is off it can cause the others to be off as well. You said Calc is always high, trying to help you with that as well.

Calc, Mag, and Alk are all related to each other. They are the big three for a reason. When one is off, others can be as well. Calc at 460 really isn't bad.
