just wanna let everyone know bryopsis can be defeated! raise Mag to 1600, light deprive for a week and get an Algae/Sailfin/Jeweled/lawnmower Blenny( he seriously went to town on the stuff). tank was full, now there is none! Love my blenny! and kent M...and saving money on hydro!

I assume your tank is fish only. It would be hard on coral or clams to go without light for an extended period of time.

You'd be surprised at how long they can go. I have blacked out my tank for up to 1.5-2 weeks with no ill effects.

    Congrats on your victory!

It killed about 8 acan frags I had, and half my other corals bleached, at about 1700.

    Also, my bryopsis didn't die.

You have to raise it slowly, even then sometimes even hardy corals don't like it. I read a lot of info about bryopsis and Tech M. Many people think it is in fact the unbalanced sulfate ions that break down the algae's ability to photosynthesize. Others think it is the unlisted heavy metal concentrations in kent's tech M. Either way, its still the most successful way to rid yourself of the beast without tear down and bleach lol. Epson Salts are about a third as successful, and Mag-Chloride is hardly successful at all. So its most likely not the magnesium anyway.

I had Bryopsis, treated with MgS04 and MgCl from BRS all the way up to a Mg level of 2700, no ill effects on anything except my serpent stars, lost all three. However the Bryopsis did not die off, only partially. Then I let the Mg slowly come back down and treated with Tech M along with 3 day blackout periods (covered tank with blankets, no lights whatsoever and no feeding). I did two 3 day black out periods separated by about a week apart. The Tech M did the trick. There is some impurity in Tech M that kills bryopsis.
