Ok, so I moved an established 90 gal system w/sump over the weekend. After getting it all set back up, I've made a few tweaks that I could find myself, but have a few more questions. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Before the move, ammonia and nitrite were undetecable, nitrate was around 5. After the move and everything settled down, ammonia and nitrite still undetectable, but nitrates (phosphates too, but I have a media reactor) skyrocketed to over 100. I did another large water change, which brought them down to 70-80. Other than doing a bunch more water changes, any suggestions for immediate relief? I'm wary of additives, and there is only one percula clown in the tank right now, he seems to be hanging in there...

Second, the setup is a bit noisier than I'd like. The three main sources of noise is:
The waterfall in the tank's overflow, sponges helped that.
The second source is where the water enters the sump from the overflow line. It falls about 4 inches into the sump, with alot of splashing. Raising the water is not really an option (poor sump design). Any suggestions or similar experiences?
The third is the Rio Hyperflo 32, which seems to be vibrating against the sump. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of wrapping with sponge filter.

Third, as I have it set up right now, the turnover rate of the system through the sump is 13x. Is that sufficient for filtration? I have a couple of powerheads that bring the entire turnover to 37x, but I'm just wondering about the sump flow.

Thanks for all your help, and I will be posting pics in my build thread when I get home from work today. I can't wait to get those nitrates down so I can start adding life!

Would like to see pics but here is MHO.
1.)Did you use the same sand and prefilter in the overflow box? If so thats where your high nitrates may have come from. Try running GAC/GFO or chem elite in your reactor.
2.)Try adding more pipe to your OFlow line and have it below the waterline in your sump. Just puchase a 3 pak of Aquaclear filter cartridges and let the pump set on them.
3.)Most people shot for 10x turnover so 13 is good. 37x is good in your DT but if you are wanting to keep SPS corals you'll want to get it over 50x by adding another PH. Maybe an Evo 1050 should suffice but thats for the future. Hope this helps good luck. ;)

Thanks for the reply. I discarded his sand and used new substrate, prefilter was rinsed thoughly. A lot of organics were mixed up during the transfer, and I think it's because of that I'm getting high nitrates.

I currently have a reactor half-full of Phosguard and Matrixcarbon, can I add the chem elite on top of that?

Just planning on LPS for now, while knowing that SPS is "simply" a powerhead away... simply... LOL!

Also, what do people recommend as the quietest submersible pump out there? MagDrives?

Another 20% water change would help.
No just let the GAC and GFO your using do its trick.
Mags are good But I use the Rio Plus 1700 and it is quiet as a mouse no hummm or vibration you would need the 2800 SS or 3100 model to maintain your flow. Is your pump external? ;)

No, submersed Rio HF 3200. I'm pretty sure most of the noise comes from it vibrating against the sump. I'm going to try padding it this evening, but if I can't silence it a bit, I'll be shopping around. The aquarium is right in our living room/dining room/kitchen. It's a bit too noisy for trying to entertain people. I might try putting sound absorbtion around in the cabinet too. Call me picky, but once I can hear the fans from my lights I'll be satisfied. What can I say? I'm a tinkerer... ;D
