As stated first thing first. Has he gotten the phosphate test kit? he really needs to know where this is at. and eliminating the tap water source is huge, but without a reactor or macro algae both of which exhaust phosphates he will need to use strictly ro water and will be changing water more often then without.

but Ill let somone else chime in. also there is a link on this forum that get specific about each type of algae causes and cures. I will try to find it.
