As many of you know people are dropping out of this expensive hobby, but for those that are looking to upgrade or go bigger now's the chance! I currently have a 55gallon reef setup and just acquired a 75gallon looking to make the switch over! My question is this, how or what is the best way to move my established tank over to the new bigger tank? I am worried about a mini cycle and trauma to my coral and fish!

-Should I use all the water from the 55g or should I fill the 75g with all new saltwater?

-Can I move everything over in one day (live rock,coral,fish,etc..)?

*Any additional opinions or tactics would be greatly appreciated from those that have upgrades to bigger tanks!

    if it where me

I would move all I had over to the new tank , minus the last couple of inches of water, which will have got cloudy and the sand bed

I would do it in one day (recently did a tank swap for a new tank of same size in 1 day)

I would make up the additional water required a couple of days in advance
and I would do it like this

    1) remove water from tank into a holding bucket/ buckets/ tubs - for live stock
    2) syphon balance of water from tank and pour into new tank
    3) once water level is high enough in new tank- add new sand bed (pre rinse of its not live sand)
    4) when you have last couple of inches of water in old tank - use this to rinse rock and move rock across to new tank ( this whole excerise will take less than 1 hour to this point on a 55 and the rock will still be wet IME)
    5) replace live stock from holding buckets/ tubs into new tank
    6) add top up water

thats what I would do if I where upgrading

thats more or less what I did when changing my tank recently and have had no ammonia or Nitrite readings - as it was all done quickly enough to prevent any notable die off on the live rock etc

I notice "toy box" wasn't listed as a holding option - shame on you, Steve!

Just kidding - great response. Nothing more to add except to rib Steve a little. ;)
